Load FM8 in standalone switch dx7 on and press send. If you are doing the drive swap yourself in your free time, and like to tinker, I’d say it’s worth doing, especially if you get a cheap standard Gotek and flash it with flashfloppy yourself. As I understand the manual you need a MIDI connection from out DX7 to in computer.

And the LED numerical display on the Gotek is partially obscured but still readable. Can you post a little more about how to transfer the patches Thanks. You can get some of this with Dexed as well: Its basically an emulation of a DX7 that allows you to create patches without the horrendous menu-diving interface of a real DX7, and you can also use it to export and import patches to and from the real hardware over MIDI. According to developer Digital Suburban, ‘the goal of the project is to be a tool/companion for the original DX7.’. It lets you create new sounds, use them in your DAW and save them to your DX-7. Dexed is a multi-platform, multi-format software synth that is modeled on the Yamaha DX7.

If I remember right, I had to install the Gotek drive upside down in order for the USB port to line up with the floppy disk slot in the II-FD’s end panel. Free Yamaha DX-7 Patch Editor & Virtual Synthesizer.

Having said that, a cool guy named Martin Tarenskeen wrote the DX Convert python software that includes the dx7iisyx2fd tool that allows you to convert DX7 cartridges from sysex format (easily made with Dexed) to floppy images, which are easily copied to a micro USB drive and inserted into the Gotek. It’s far easier to just use a sysex capable MIDI to USB cable to connect up a pc or laptop running Dexed and manage your library that way, sending cartridges and patches to the II-FD. I’d say it is worth it if you want to have a lot of patches and not bring a computer with you. The general theory is to transfer these sounds from a computer. Turn the protection switch of the internal memory off. First, insert the cartridge that contains the voice data that you wish to load. I’ve done the Gotek/flashfloppy floppy emulator swap on both of my II-FDs. The Volca FM shares its voice architecture with the Yamaha DX7 synth. You can load all the contents of a cartridge into the internal memory of the DX7.
